What you are reading

Deep Field aggregates publicly available feeds. Headlines, summaries and photographs belong to the organisations that produced them and are reproduced here at the length a feed is meant to be reproduced at: enough to tell you whether to click, and not a word more. Every item links to its source. If you are a publisher and you would like your feed removed, say so and it will be gone on the next build.

Licences

NASA material is generally in the public domain as a work of the United States Government, though NASA's own guidance asks that its use not imply endorsement, and some third-party photographs carried on NASA sites are separately owned.

ESA/Hubble, ESA/Webb, ESO and NOIRLab release their public images under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence, which permits reuse with credit. Deep Field carries the credit line supplied with each image; where you reuse an image from here, take the credit from the source page, which is one click away on every plate.

The Astronomy Picture of the Day archive mixes public-domain NASA imagery with photographs that remain the copyright of the individual astrophotographer. Where APOD names a copyright holder, that name is shown on the plate, and reuse needs their permission rather than NASA's.

Commercial outlets — SpaceNews, Sky & Telescope, Universe Today, Astronomy, EarthSky, Phys.org, ScienceDaily and the outlets aggregated by the Spaceflight News API — appear here as headline, short summary and link only. Their full articles stay on their sites.

Accuracy

Nothing here is fact-checked by Deep Field, because Deep Field does not have an editor. It reflects what its sources published, including their mistakes and their subsequent corrections, which arrive whenever the source issues them. Launch times in particular are a moving target: they are pulled from the schedule at gather time and change constantly. Do not plan a drive to the Cape around this site.

Availability

This is a free site with no uptime commitment. If a source goes down, its stories stop appearing until it comes back. If the build fails, the previous version of the site stays up, which is one of the pleasant properties of publishing static files.

The site itself

The layout, the classification vocabulary, the colour system and the code that produces these pages are the work of the site's author. Reuse of the aggregated content is governed by the licences above, not by this site.
